Nedolgo nazaj smo s prijatelji obujali spomine in beseda je nanesla tudi na eno od srečanj, ko je skupina jezdecev krenila na cca 50 kilometrov dolgo pot od Planine pri Sevnici proti naši kmetiji, mož Gorazd pa jim je s svojim konjem krenil naproti. Za točko srečanja so določili obrobje gozdička v bližini Krškega, kakšnih 20 kilometrov od nas. Najti se na nepoznanem terenu, ki je za povrh vsega še poln grmičevja in dreves, ni tako enostavno, kljub dogovarjanju po mobilnem telefonu. »Stojiva midva s konjem in v popolni tišini, ki naju obkroža, jaz razmišljam, v katero smer bi krenil,« razlaga Gorazd. »Potem pa kar naenkrat konj dvigne glavo, usmeri pogled in ušesa v eno stran, čez nekaj trenutkov glasno zarezgeče in nekje iz daljave prejme odgovor, dva, tri…« In tako so se našli, a zahvala ne gre moderni tehniki, ampak živali s superiornimi čuti. Da bi lažje preživel, je mati narava dala divjemu konju bolj izostrene čute kot njegovim plenilcem. Tudi udomačeni konji se še vedno obnašajo enako, kot njihovi predniki, vedno oprezajo za nevarnostjo in so pripravljeni takoj pobegniti stran. V urbanem okolju pa se srečujejo z veliko več izzivi, kot se jih najde v divjini. Ropot avtomobilov, traktorjev, poljedelskih strojev, glasba iz radia, šumenje in plapolanje plastik, tuljenje siren, trobljenje, kričanje ljudi, z vsem tem in še več se konju v divjini nikoli ni treba soočati. Neizkušeni lastniki konj dostikrat ne znajo ceniti konjevega izjemnega zaznavanja. Pogosto kakšno reakcijo označijo kot »neumnost«, in jo, kar je zelo narobe, kaznujejo. Spoštovati bi morali dejstvo, da se konji neverjetno zavedajo okolice in se odzivajo na stvari, ki jih mi s svojimi čuti nismo sposobni zaznati. Ljudem je težko priznati superiornost teh konjevih čutil (vid, sluh, okus, vonj in dotik) in razumeti, da lahko zaznavanje nam nečesa nevidnega ali neslišnega pri njih sproži tako bliskovite reakcije. Morebiti se nam kdaj zdi, da se konji vznemirijo brez razloga. Verjemite mi, vedno je kakšen – za konja – razumen razlog. Težava nastane potem, zaradi naše reakcije. Poglejmo si na konkretnem primeru. Naš prvi par, jahač in konj, se sprehajata po naravi, ko se slednji kar naenkrat vznemiri, visoko dvigne glavo, začne prhati in ne želi več naprej. S svojimi izostrenimi čuti je zaslutil nekaj neznanega (lahko je karkoli, žival v grmovju, odvržene pnevmatike ali pokvarjen pralni stroj, vonj krvi/kadavra…). Nagonsko je konjeva prva misel, da mu to (nekaj novega in neznanega) predstavlja nevarnost, da se mu bo zgodilo nekaj hudega. Jahač, nejevoljen zaradi konjevega »nerazumnega« obnašanja, začne nervozno močno vleči za vajeti, suvati z nogami, udarjati z bičem, in vse to pospremiti še z kakšno krepko glasno zmerljivko o butastem konju. Skratka, konju nanese bolečino. Konjeva naslednja misel je: »Vedel sem, da se mi bo nekaj hudega zgodilo, in res se je. Naslednjič, ko zaznam to isto stvar, moram biti bolje pripravljen in pobegniti preden mi prizadene bolečino.« Konj ne more logično razmišljati in razumeti, da ga ni prizadel recimo divji zajec, v grmu, ampak samo poveže novost z bolečo izkušnjo in si to zapiše v spomin. Tudi pri drugem paru je začetek zgodbe isti, konj se enako vznemiri in enako razmišlja. Jahač opazi konjevo negotovost in ga pomiri, poboža po vratu in mu prigovarja z mirnim in nežnim glasom. Počaka, da se konj umiri in mu dovoli, da si temeljito ogleda »tisto strašljivo reč« v grmovju, potem mirno in sproščeno nadaljujeta pot. Konj si misli: »Sicer sem se na začetku res vznemiril, a vidim, da mi ni storilo nič žalega in se mi tega ni več treba bati.« Iz česar sledi, da bo prvi konj vedno, ko bo zaznal npr. divjega zajca, zaradi prve negativne izkušnje pričakoval nelagodje in bolečino, zato bo želel pobegniti stran. Drugi konj, ki je dobil priložnost spoznati, da divji zajec ni nič strašljivega, pa bo mirno nadaljeval svojo pot. Vsaka tovrstna izkušnja zaznamuje konja in njegovo obnašanje. Na nas pa je, da mu pomagamo novosti spoznavati na najbolj pozitiven način kar se le da.
