Konjev nagon preživetja

Opazujem konje na našem pašniku in očitno je, da so sedaj, ko so okoliški kmetje poželi še zadnjo koruzo, spet srečni, ker po dolgem času vidijo daleč naokrog. Naše tri radovednice, dve enoletnici in dvoletnica, zdaj z zanimanjem spremljajo promet na cesti, in čeprav je od ograde do ceste kar nekaj metrov, dvajset, če sem natančna, pritečejo ogledat vsakega pešca, kolesarja ali mamico z otročkom v vozičku na sprehodu. Večino časa pa, kljub temu, da zaradi suše paše skorajda ni, vedno nekaj grizljajo. Z glavo, sklonjeno do tal, so konji zelo ranljivi, saj v tem položaju ne vidijo, kaj se dogaja okoli njih. Vsak najmanjši šum jih tako »vrže pokonci«. Če vidijo daleč okoli sebe in ugotovijo, da ni nič strašnega, se spet hitro posvetijo paši. A ko jih obkrožajo visoke koruznice, ali pa grmovje, saj je vseeno, lahko samo slutijo, kaj se dogaja okoli njih, kakšna nevarna zver se potika po nepreglednem zelenju. Najpogosteje zato pobegnejo stran od izvora šuma, se ustavijo, prhajoč vznemirjeno opazujejo okoli sebe in se šele počasi in previdno vrnejo k svojem najpomembnejšem opravilu, prehranjevanju.

Prostoživeči konji v divjini, tako kot nekoč njihovi predniki, divji konji, preživijo zaradi svojega izrednega nagona za preživetje. Naravni sovražniki so večinoma veliki plenilci iz družine mačk in psov. Mati narava je za konje poskrbela tako, da jih je anatomsko in psihično naredila za tekače. Pobeg, šprint naravnost stran od nevarnosti, od kakršne koli strašljive stimulacije, je najboljši način za preživetje. Temu nagonu je podrejeno celotno konjevo telo. Njegova telesna zgradba je atletska, konji so gibčni in hitri. Imajo majhen želodec, zato večino dneva jedo, a vedno le male porcije, saj s polnim želodcem težko hitro tečeš. Ne morejo si privoščiti takega razkošja, kot si ga privoščijo krave, da se napokajo do sitega, se uležejo in počasi preživljajo. Konj se je razvijal v drugačnem okolju in vse te njegove fizične in psihične lastnosti so temu podrejene. Zaradi tega so tudi njegove reakcije povsem drugačne od, na primer, oslov. Zanje sicer pravimo, da so trmasti, a glede na njihovo osnovno življenjsko okolje, v katerem so se razvili, na neravne, skromne, kamnite terene, je njihovo obnašanje povsem razumljivo. Da bi preživel v takem okolju, osel ne sme reagirati z nagonskim begom, kot to počne konj, ampak se mora ustaviti in premisliti: na eni strani je nevarnost (plenilec), na drugi strani prepad; bom bežal ali se bom branil? Konjevo glavno vodilo za preživetje je »najprej beži, potem razmišljaj«, pri osličkih pa to žal ne pride v poštev.

Kljub temu, da domače konje varuje ograda in da jih zapiramo v bokse, so še vedno globoko v sebi tiste divje živali, ki so v svojem naravnem okolju vedno morale biti pripravljene na beg pred plenilci. Zato se toliko bolje počutijo, ko lahko opazujejo naravo okoli sebe in je vse lepo pregledno do koder jim seže oko. In zato se bomo tudi ljudje z njimi bolje razumeli, če bomo, ko smo ob njih, upoštevali in spoštovali ta nagon.
